The Good Trouble Scholarship

Application deadline: June 15th. Applicants will be informed of the decision by early July.

Established in 2020: In memory of George Floyd and Congressman John Lewis

Our Mission
  1. Build a robust Afro-descent community at NPAP
  2. Support Afro-descendant candidates in psychoanalytic training
 
Scholarship Details
  • Available to: three newly enrolled candidates of African descent
  • Duration: one year (with an option to reapply for a second year)
  • Coverage: Full tuition and fees (up to $3,200 per academic year)
  • This scholarship honors those who stood up for justice and aims to increase diversity in psychoanalysis.

HOW TO APPLY

Submissions must include
  1. Personal Statement: Describe your current situation, professional efforts, goals related to your background, and why you consider yourself a suitable recipient of the award.
  2. Official Transcripts: Submit official transcripts from both NPAP and your most recent academic institution.
  3. Letters of Recommendation: Provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who know you well. If you have clinical experience, use references who can comment on your skills. Otherwise, choose someone who can assess your potential as a psychoanalyst.
  4. Submission Instructions: Please send all documents together in one email, with each attachment labeled separately with your name. Use the following labels:
  • Personal Statement
    Transcript – [Institution Name]
  • LOR 1 from [Name]
  • LOR 2 from [Name]

HONORING COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL ACTION

The Lou Berkowitz Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 30th of the current year. The recipient will be informed by the end of May.

Established in 1980, this scholarship celebrates Dr. Berkowitz’s dedication to social action by supporting diverse voices in psychoanalysis.

Scholarship Details
  • Duration: 1 year (with possibility of second-year extension)
  • Coverage: Full tuition and fees (up to $3,200 per academic year)

 

Eligibility
  1. NPAP candidate in good standing
  2. Achieved matriculation level or higher
  3. From and/or working in an underrepresented community

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

Established in memory of Ernest Angel, past Vice President of NPAP.

Scholarship Details
  • Recognize outstanding work in psychoanalysis
  • Provide financial assistance to recipients
 
Evaluation Criteria
  • Thoughtfulness
  • Originality
  • Contribution to psychoanalytic literature
 
Award Details
  • Amount: Determined by the committee
  • May be divided among multiple recipients
  • Subject to Board of Trustees approval

HOW TO APPLY

  • Submit an original, unpublished paper
  • Topics: Theoretical, historical, research-based, or clinically grounded arguments
  • Note: Case studies are not accepted.
